Safe and inviting German railway
underpasses
with the new lighting. Only now the historical structure of the underpasses unfolds giving it an urban spatial effect”
Jürgen Roters, Mayor of City of Cologne
In many cities, underpasses provide vital infrastructure connections in a city. These underpasses are in general not very pleasant to walk through at night and in the worst case these are a no-go area for people as they feel unsafe.
The “Lebendige Stadt” (lively city) project’s main aim was to increase the inhabitants' feeling of security when using these underpasses. It makes these areas more livable while at the same time saving energy and cost.
Dark railway underpasses are barren places, sometimes located in deprived areas. The “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation has initiated an illumination program to revitalize these public places. So far, 31 railway underpasses in 24 German cities were permanently and artistically illuminated.
