    Customer challenge

The Grand Sofitel is one of the Netherlands’ most famous hotels. Sofitel hotels are located in some of the world’s most prestigious places, and the Amsterdam branch is one of only eight to receive the title ‘Sofitel Legend’. Could a contemporary light renovation meet the hotel’s high standards?

    The right lighting

Creating a welcoming and warm décor is vital for any five-star hotel, and the Grand Sofitel is no exception. Not only did the lights need to preserve the hotel’s rich heritage, but it was vital that they met the Accor hotel chain’s energy standards. With 177 guest rooms and 21 meeting rooms, which have a mix of both traditional and modern décor, the hotel needed a carefully constructed lighting solution.

LED technology received a warm welcome. The flexibility of the Philips hospitality range meant that we could preserve the historic feel in places like the lobby, with its traditional chandeliers. This was achieved using Novallure lamps, which fit into conventional sockets, but have a much greater lifespan than older bulbs. The bulbs create a warm and glamorous glow that adds to the luxurious atmosphere.

In other areas of the hotel, like the meeting rooms, we used hospitality lighting to create a modern, stylish atmosphere. LuxSpace downlights and StyliD spotlights were chosen for their ability to create clean, refreshing ambience and attractive accent lighting where needed. Following the renovations, the hotel has won several awards and is back in the spotlight where it belongs.

“We can’t give any facts on the total savings on energy and costs yet, but we’re expecting it to be 70% to 80%. And that’s not to mention the vast amount of time that will be saved on maintenance.” - Willem van Dam, Chief of Technical Services
