Q3 What is the difference between a Philips lamp and another make of lamp?
A The Philips name guarantees a product that meets the requirements of the purchaser as much as possible. This is true not only for the quality of the product and the components used, but also for the price and pre-sales and after-sales service, for example concerning advice about the product and the handling of possible complaints.

Q4 Why is an energy-saving lamp environmentally friendly?
A An energy-saving lamp uses about 80% less energy than a light bulb. This saves fossil fuels and reduces emissions from power stations. The lamp does however contain a few environmentally unfriendly components (a small quantity of mercury). At the end of its life, the lamp must be disposed of as "small chemical waste" (SCW).

Q5 My energy-saving lamps have been failing earlier than the specified life. Why is this?
A If an energy-saving lamp had a lifetime shorter than 1/3 of the average lifetime, then the lamp must be forwarded for more detailed inspection. This applies to energy-saving lamps within 2 years of purchase. A short lifetime is often caused by the lamp being used incorrectly, namely in combination with a dimmer or in an outside fitting with a dimming or proximity switch. You can contact our Customer Service for more details. We will treat this case-by-case.

Q6 Can fluorescent lights be put on a dimmer?
A Fluorescent lights like 'TL' lamps can in principle be dimmed if the correct ballast is used.

Q7 Why is there noise coming from my fluorescent lamp?
A There is probably an incorrect transformer combination. This can result in damage to the lamp or to the installation. Hence stop and modify the installation.

Q8 Is special disposal required for my halogen lamps?
A Only gas discharge lamps have to be disposed of as "small chemical waste" (SCW). These contain small quantities of mercury. This concerns: Energy-saving lamps, TL, PL, SOX lamps. Light bulbs and halogen lamps are hence not SCW.

Q9 Which lamps emit the least UV output for illuminating e.g. a painting?
A Philips lamps for general use are designed to have as less as possible unwanted UV output. The most critical lamps are halogen lamps, but most Philips halogen lamps use special glass to limit the UV emission; we indicate this on the packing as UV Block.

Q10 Which is more cost efficient, halogen or a fluorescent lamp?
A A fluorescent lamp is about 4 times more energy-efficient then a halogen lamp. The cost efficiency is of course dependant on the purchase price of the lamp, but fluorescent is always more efficient.

Q11 What is the average life expectancy of a standard car bulb?
A For maximum road safety and driver comfort, headlights used under normal conditions should be replaced at least once per two years or every 50,000 km.

How to maintain good lighting for the car?

A

1. Change bulbs in pairs. 2. Replace headlamp bulbs every 50,000 kms or every two years. 3. Adjust ALL lights regularly to avoid dazzling. 4. Check all signaling & interior lamps. 5. Regularly clean headlight lenses. 6. Always have a spare kit in your glove compartment in case of emergency. 7.Upgrade your automotive lights to homologated with original quality lamps.

What is Xenon HID Light?

A

Xenon HID bulb is a High Intensity Discharge bulb filled with a mixture of noble gases including xenon. The bulb has no filament, unlike a halogen bulb, but the light arc is created between two electrodes. As in the case with other gas discharge bulbs, the Xenon HID bulb has an electronic starter for quick ignition, which requires an electronic ballast to function properly.

Q14 What are the advantages of Xenon HID Light?
A

The Xenon HID bulb provides more than twice the amount of light of a halogen bulb, while only consuming half the power (wattage). Therefore, the driver can see more clearly, and the car has more power for other functions. The clear white light produced by the Xenon HID bulb is similar to daylight. Research has shown that this enables drivers to concentrate better. Furthermore, this particular light color reflects the road markings and signs better than conventional lighting. The Xenon HID bulb also delivers a marked contribution to road safety even in the event of limited visibility due to weather conditions. In practical terms, the life span of the bulb is equal to that of the car, which means that the bulb need only to be replaced in exceptional cases.

What is the difference between Philips UV Block Quartz Glass and hardglass?

A

Philips uses UV-cut quartz glass whereas competitors use hard glass. The advantages with UV-cut quartz glass are impressive:



1. Better resistance to high pressure
By using UV-cut quartz glass, Philips can increase the pressure inside the bulb giving it more light output (e.g. VisionPlus for +50% more light). Increasing the pressure in a hard glass bulb can cause an explosion.

2. Better resistance to thermal shocks
Only a burning bulb made of quartz glass (filament 2650°c, glass 800°c) can resist thermal shocks (e.g. if a drop of cold water touches the hot bulb, which can happen when you drive through water with a broken headlight unit).

3. Optimal protection against harmful effect of UV radiation
Compared to hard glass and standard quartz glass, UV-cut quartz glass gives the best protection and therefore prevents the clear plastic lenses from becoming yellow.
